Holiday Gift Guide for the Preppy Girl

Happy hump day, gals! Hopefully you’ve recovered after yesterday’s election and all of the stress that comes along with it. Honestly, I sat in my room and ate chocolate and pizza while watching Hallmark Christmas movies. Can you blame me? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who did this! I wanted to start off a new day with a fun Christmas gift guide to lift our spirits! I’m a pretty preppy person in terms of style and even home decor to a degree, so some of my favorite Christmas gifts have been classic, stylish items. Last year, my boyfriend David got me a Tiffany charm necklace! Talk about classic!

So let’s chat about a few of these super cute gifts! Probably my favorite one on here are those L.L. Bean classic duck boots. I have a pair of my mom’s from the 1980s and they’re still going strong. You can’t go wrong with these! I also love a monogrammed baseball hat to go with my duck boots (I wore a similar combo to work yesterday). Baseball hats are so classic and represent a wonderful American past time. My mom got me a monogrammed hat for my birthday and I wear it at least once a week!

Because I love Jackie Kennedy so much, I had to include a few of her style favorites! Pearls are probably my number one go-to item when I’m throwing on something to wear to work in the morning. I think JKO thought the same thing. You’ll also never see me without a pair of sunglasses, particularly cat-eye. They’re part of my signature look and make a great Christmas gift!

Must-Have Asymmetrical Dress

Good morning friends! I’m so glad it’s finally Thursday. Tomorrow I get to go home for the first time in 7 months to see my family! I’m so excited to get a home cooked meal and cuddle my sweet little kitty! You know that saying “home is where your mom is?” Well, it’s the truth. Nothing beats walking in the front door and being surrounded by love.

In other news, how pretty is the dress I’m wearing?! Tulip Boutique in Kansas City sent me the dress as part of their monthly ‘Tulip Twist’ contest (which should be on their Facebook page sometime today if you don’t mind casting a vote!) The dress is really easy to slip on and looks really chic with the fun asymmetric hem. I love that it’s appropriate for the office and even for a night out!

Let’s also talk about my hat. It was a steal at J. Crew for $9 on clearance (link here)! I went to one of their factory outlets and saw it sitting there in all it’s marked down glory. I have a black sunhat but it just absorbs the heat and sunlight so this neutral one is perfect for the Dallas heat! The hat is really structured and well-made, which I certainly appreciate.

Moving on to other accessories, my necklace was also a great find at New York & Co. for $4 on clearance as well! I’ve gotten so many compliments on it and it looks good with so many different outfits. The nautical knot detail in the center gives it that extra something an otherwise boring gold necklace needs. Also, my heels are from the Target Merona collection last year! I can’t say they’re the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn because let’s be honest, Target shoes aren’t that well-made. However, they look really cute if you’re only going to be sitting at your desk all day. Walking around might really bother your feet!

Let me know if you like the look!

Falling into Style (feat. J Crew)

summer fall clothes

It’s Fri-yay! After a long week of job interviews and running errands, I’m so ready for a Friday night. Not that I do much else during the week, but the job hunt really can drain the energy right out of you. Dallas has also been under heavy cloud cover for the last week and not only did it bring the rain, but it also brought gloominess with it. Along with the sunshine went my good mood! However, the air has been hinting at cooler temperatures (read: no more 3-digit heat) and my mind has gone right to fall!

Here in Dallas, I’ve been told that it doesn’t really cool down until November. Perfect. There goes my blanket scarves, quilted vests, and riding boots. How basic, right? I’m realizing very quickly that the typical clothing I wore during autumn back in my home state, won’t be enjoyed here until later this year. Even so, blanket scarves aren’t really needed anywhere until October. So let’s talk about clothes that work in the awkward transition months between the heat of summer and the chill of fall!

Dress for the Season and the Temperature

My favorite tops for fall are chambray and gingham long sleeves. Texas isn’t the place for long sleeves and pants until winter (seriously). Instead, choose one or the other. Pair long sleeves with shorts or short sleeves with pants. Comfort is everything to me and I’m not going to be comfy if I’m sweating to death.

Since fall is all about rich oranges, reds, and deep blues, buy t-shirts, shorts, and accessories in traditional fall colors. For example, the adorable red skirt pictured above is the perfect fall piece that fits into that unpredictable seasonal transition. It looks like fall and feels like summer! Another example of fall colors working in summer pieces are the multi-colored shorts.

Finally, utilize accessories! It may be 80 degrees in the middle of September but wear those tan booties you love so much. That warm scarf you can’t wear yet? Tie it to the handles on your bag for a fall statement piece. Check out the other great transition pieces I linked for you below!//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/#/?options=%7B%22widgetId%22%3A%2257b67ba361d1dd5cd5a4563f%22%2C%22version%22%3A1%2C%22pid%22%3A%22uid3025-28872695-82%22%2C%22size%22%3A200%2C%22columns%22%3A3%2C%22rows%22%3A1%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fapi.shopstyle.com%2Fapi%2Fv2%22%2C%22iframeHeight%22%3A275%2C%22iframeWidth%22%3A705%7D-Liz

Festive Fourth of July Picks

fourth of july styleHello lovely girls! I thought today I’d share with you a few Fourth of July favorites for this upcoming holiday! June has flown by so quickly and before you know it the iconic American celebration will be here. Plan early! I highlighted 7 adorable, patriotic pieces above and have linked them along with a few others below so be sure to check them out!

// //shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/#/?options=%7B%22widgetId%22%3A%225768965661d1dd36be3df85a%22%2C%22version%22%3A1%2C%22pid%22%3A%22uid3025-28872695-82%22%2C%22size%22%3A200%2C%22columns%22%3A3%2C%22rows%22%3A1%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fapi.shopstyle.com%2Fapi%2Fv2%22%2C%22iframeHeight%22%3A275%2C%22iframeWidth%22%3A705%7DAs for me and my 4th of July plans, I’ll be hanging out with one of my best friends and her family in Topeka! How fun, right? We rarely get to see each other so I’m really thankful that this summer I’ll get to spend some time with her. Without a doubt this is my favorite holiday to┬ácelebrate. It’s the one time of the year where classic American, preppy style is not only worn but celebrated! For one day out of the year my wardrobe is super stylish!

My outfit is still in the making but I will most certainly be wearing my Lilly Pulitzer fireworks skirt. It’s seriously the most festive and fun piece of clothing I own! I don’t think they make it anymore sadly or else I’d buy something similar in that pattern and end up wearing it all summer. Who says 4th of July has to end? Anyway enjoy your Tuesday and drink some coffee for me!

Kentucky Derby Style and Tips for the Race (links included!)

Hello friends! We’re nearing a very special date in May! No, not Cinco de Mayo- Derby Day! This annual event is probably one of the most prestigious things to attend every spring. People come from all over to sport their big hats and bet on their favorite horse. Several years ago I had the opportunity to attend with a friend of mine. We had ourselves a grand ol’ time!

kentucky derby style tips

For me, the fashion was the most exciting party of the day. Shocking since I’m a fashion blogger, isn’t it? The year we went it poured the entire time and we only had infield tickets, meaning that there was no covering or seating. The grand stands would have been lovely if they hadn’t been $600 a ticket. That’s another story though! Anyone who was in the infield inevitably got wet or muddy in some way. The fashion down there was a little lacking, however everyone else looked smashing!

I’m convinced the the best styles there were the most classic. Vineyard Vines is the official sponsor of the Kentucky Derby and for this event they were kind of my go-to for dress ideas. You’ll need something cute to wear during the countless renditions of ‘Sweet Caroline’ and ‘My Old Kentucky Home’! I’ve included a few of my style favorites for this event below (or a viewing party if you’re attending one!)//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/#/?options=%7B%22widgetId%22%3A%22571fc91661d1dd359ed11bc4%22%2C%22version%22%3A1%2C%22pid%22%3A%22uid3025-28872695-82%22%2C%22size%22%3A200%2C%22columns%22%3A3%2C%22rows%22%3A1%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fapi.shopstyle.com%2Fapi%2Fv2%22%2C%22iframeHeight%22%3A275%2C%22iframeWidth%22%3A705%7D
For comfort’s sake, I included wedges instead of stilettos as an option for shoes. You’ll be standing a lot and unless you have a great pair of Manolo’s, the pain in your feet isn’t worth it. However, wedges or a cute little sandal is a suitable, stylish alternative. When I went to the race a few years ago, it rained most of the day and I was so glad I didn’t wear high heels! I would have just sunk in the mud.

Also another little tip- you can’t take anything bigger than a clutch. Security won’t let you in! Given that most people get there before noon and the races don’t start until late in the afternoon, it really sucks. My suggestion is to take a small battery operated phone charger and cord, keep credit cards in the clutch (no wallet) with a few band aids for blisters, and a sample size tube of lipstick and perfume.

If you’re simply going to a viewing party, you’ll luck out with a bigger bag for your stuff! Enjoy!
