Dorm Room Necessities

DormRoom

Happy Monday beautiful girls! I hope your weekend was lots of fun and filled with great Instagram-worthy pictures. How basic am I? Given that I ate macarons, went to brunch, and then took a stroll through Whole Foods over the weekend, I’d say I’m pretty basic! At least I’ll admit to it right?

Since it’s almost back to school season and so many lovely ladies are headed to college this fall, I wanted to focus a blog post on dorm room style. Thanks to Pinterest, the dorm rooms our parents might have had are being made so much more stylish with fun, inexpensive decor. When I was shopping for my first year of college, I headed straight to Target and took advantage of their college geared collection called Room Essentials. My dorm room was so cute that year! Take a look below!

Since I graduated college recently, I’m going to impart some of my dorm room function wisdom on you! First, don’t spend a fortune on bedding or towels. Living in a dorm simply isn’t compatible with luxury, fluffy linens. You will spill coffee and mac n cheese on everything and regret it when it won’t come out of your bedspread. Second, bring something that makes noise like a fan. I can’t stand hearing doors slam and thudding footsteps going down the hallways at all hours of the night. You’ll thank me for this tip later. Finally, get a wall calendar! I like to keep my schedule on my phone and in a planner of some sort. Plus, it can be helpful when coordinating schedules with your roommate!

Style and function go hand in hand when you’re living in confined quarters. Target dorm room stuff always seems to cater to both of those things. Before going out and buying new things though, check out the layout of your dorm room online to see how much room you will have. I was surprised at how big my room was compared to what I was expecting!

Pretty Apartment Essentials

Happy Friday lovely girls! Only one more week until I make my big move to Dallas and I’m getting so excited! Having inventoried all of the stuff I have (really just a bunch of clutter and things I don’t need) I made a little list of things that are on my “to buy” list. That “little list” keeps growing though. The sheer amount of things that a girl can accumulate in the name of it being cute is quite surprising!

chic apartments

Number one on my list is a gray or cream-colored tufted headboard. I can’t stand my bed just up against a wall with nothing to pull it together so to speak. A bed should be a space you go to relax and sleep. Frankly, if it isn’t orderly and somewhat dream-like, then sleep simply doesn’t come easily to me. Not sure if that makes me high-maintenance or not but I’m betting that’s what a few people are thinking. What can I say though, I like a pretty space!

The second thing on my list is a great standing mixer! My mom has a white Kitchen Aid mixer and it’s so useful. I’m not much help in the kitchen, but I do like to bake! Funny story though, I have the tendency to forget if I’m baking something and simply let it burn until I remember. I’ve done this with place and bake cookies quite often!

Finally, I’m hoping to get a great, high quality frame for a photo of my boyfriend David and I. Having pictures of family and friends around the house makes a space so much more personal. I found this Kate Spade one at Dillard’s a few weeks ago and have been admiring it ever since.

Blogger Event in Kansas City

Morning beauties! I hope your week went as quickly as mine. Frankly, I’m exhausted from it. My schedule is usually 9-5 Monday through Friday but on Tuesday my day lasted a little longer than usual. I had the opportunity to meet up with a bunch of great Kansas City area bloggers for hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. It was the first time I had ever gotten to do anything like that and it was such a fun event! The Blog Guild organized the event and Golden & Pine graciously hosted all of us crazy bloggers! Getting a group of fashion-conscious, girl bosses together for an evening of socializing is always bound to be a great time.

window seat ideas

Golden & Pine has a beautiful space in the up and coming neighborhood of Brookside! Exposed wood and concrete floors added a really unique, hipster vibe to the store. Think Anthropologie with a mix of West Elm and you have Golden & Pine! I fell in love with how they styled this window seat area. Big throw pillows are an easy way to cozy-up a space!

spring inspired food

Another great way to make a space warm and inviting is wonderful food! Heirloom Bakery made these amazing treats for the girls to munch on. Pink donuts with a floral garnish satisfied my sweet tooth. Don’t you just adore the pink glaze dripping down the sides? On slices of wheat toast was hummus topped with veggies and a creamy whipped topping!

Golden & Pine totally embraces my firm belief that plants and flowers brighten the home! They had so many adorable little packets of seeds to choose from with various combinations of flowers!

A styling element they had going on was baskets full of pillows and blankets. The room just made you feel at ease! That’s saying a lot for someone who walked into a social situation where she knew no one and suddenly became friends with everyone. I’m tellin’ you, this group of girls is great!

elegant bathroom soap

There was so much detail that went into every little corner of the shop. Even the hand soaps were beautifully displayed in little wooden boxes. Every time I go into places like this, I come home and want to play interior decorator in every room of my home. After being around girls who are even more creative than I am, the desire to try harder and create beautiful spaces is coming back. Sometimes you just get in a slump and need other people to motivate you. The company you keep really does effect you!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas in every price range

Happy Tuesday lovelies! This weekend I spent time with my cousin taking her high school graduation photos and getting makeup done at Sephora. I also spent an evening with my aunt eating a delicious gourmet pizza! More than likely, that’s where my 2lb weight gain came from this morning!

Since Mother’s Day is on Sunday I thought it important to do a little gift guide that features items besides candles, flowers, and coffee mugs. Even though those are traditional, good ideas, we can branch out a little I think! Everything you see here is under $100 and in a variety or price ranges so everyone can have something nice for their moms!
good gifts for mom

A few of these ideas are rather unique like the pineapple string lights! What a fun, cute gift though especially if your mom has a good sense of humor! If she enjoys cooking (mine does not), Kate Spade cutting boards are a pretty gift for the chef. Some ladies also enjoy natural beauty products like Moroccan Oil.

Personally, I bought my mom a colonial America-inspired floor cloth for Mother’s Day! Normally, these rugs run over $300 for even a small one. I found a seller on eBay who gave me a deal on a 6′ by 3′ hallway runner for $75! The reason these decorative pieces cost so much is because of how labor intensive they are. They start as a heavy canvas and receive several coats of polyurethane before being painted in a design. After the paint dries, they coat it again with polyurethane. This process takes several weeks! Believe me when I say I got a deal on this floor cloth! I can’t wait for my mom to see it (she’s always wanted one.)

I’m linking the above items in this convenient little widget below so you know where everything came from and the price!
