What to Expect for February Mental Health

bouquet effect

Who else is glad January is over? It’s one of those months that only exists because it has to. February is a little better in that it’s a month full of pink, chocolate, and a ground hog that may or may not see it’s shadow (but he’s the cutest thing ever!). None the less, it’s a month that can also drag on and on. Winter, although beautiful in it’s own right, is not my favorite season for mental health reasons. It’s just hard! Sunlight is hard to find, coats keep us concealed, and central heating gives us dry skin. I’ll pass. So what can we expect this month in terms of mental health?

Hope for the Coming Weeks

We’re almost half way through winter! Finally. In my opinion, winter starts as soon as Christmas ends. Christmas is really it’s own season. Right around the first week of February however, we start to feel hope! March is just around the corner! The birds will be singing, the earth is starting to wake up again, and Michael’s Craft Store is full of Easter greenery. There is hope indeed!

Loneliness (Looking at You Valentine’s Day)

Ah, Valentine’s Day. The dreaded holiday of single people. I remember being single not so long ago and thinking the holiday was silly. Even as someone who’s married I still kind of think it is. And as an independent gal, I’ll buy my own flowers and chocolate if I want them! However, for many single people, it can be a really lonely time. It seems like everyone on social media is out on a date and you wonder when it’s going to be your turn. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, take yourself on a date or meet up with some friends. Get the wine and cheeseboard and treat yourself to some roses! I’ve always thought that before you can love someone else, you have to love yourself.

Stretches of Depression

Even though we can FEEL spring coming, February can still be depressing. Many of us will probably experience a few stretches of depression throughout the month. These are most likely to occur during rainy or snowy weather thanks to the sun hiding behind the clouds. It’s important to go outside and get fresh air in your lungs and take vitamins! Meditation and keeping a journal can also help during this time.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Just like in January, this will still be something many people deal with well into February. S.A.D.  impacts mental health as well as physical health at times. The mind-body connection is real people! Since this disorder can be difficult to treat, it’s best to tell your doctor about the symptoms you’re experiencing to know what kind of treatment will be best for you. BUT know that you are not alone in the way you feel. Many, many people understand the feelings of sadness and exhaustion.

Hibernation Mode

People, like some animals, often feel the need to hibernate this time of the year. The cold and wet conditions tell us we need to stay inside to thrive. Unfortunately, this usually leads to feelings of isolation and exhaustion. The more we stay inside and in bed, the more isolated and tired we feel. Have you ever slept for 11 hours straight? You usually feel like you can sleep even longer. That’s like hibernation, except in humans, it usually just ends in a splitting headache and feeling depressed. Get out of bed and be among people, even if you don’t want to.

February isn’t always a fun month. But taking care of your mental health is the best way to get through it. My grandmom always used to say “it’s always brighter in the morning,” and the morning will come sooner than you think.

Galentine’s Day Party Ideas

Galentine's Day Party Ideas

Hello beautiful! It’s another Monday morning and I’m so glad it’s the first day of February! I can finally decorate everything with pink and red hearts and not feel silly for it. It’s a holiday that women tend to love and men often think is made up by Hallmark. Whatever the case may be, I enjoy a day that I have an excuse to decorate for. If you’re single though, Valentine’s Day is kind of salt in the wound. It just isn’t a fun holiday without a boyfriend. Trust me, I’ve been there! Instead of focusing on what might be lacking in your life, focus on what you do have: girl friends!

Celebrating Galentine’s Day

The concept of ‘Galentine’s Day’ is all about celebrating the friendships you have with your best gal pals. It’s a great idea that so many women have embraced as part of their Valentine’s festivities! While many ladies might enjoy a night on the town or a movie in, I’ve got a few much more creative ideas for you to consider this year!

-Wine & Design Event: Having been to several of these paint and sip parties, I can tell you that they’re a lot of fun! I usually go to a Wine & Design studio, but many will also come to your home for a private party if you have enough people. See what paintings they have available to do for Valentine’s and then book your day!

-Tassel Garland Party: These decorative pieces have become a favorite for many! Why not get the girls together and make them? From my own experience, I can tell you that it is time consuming so if you want something a little faster, this company offers already made tassels that you just have to organize and string to your liking!

-Cake Pop Decorating: I just love cake pops and gained a bit of Christmas weight from eating too many. A great Galentine’s Day might include decorating these tasty desserts! Read the decorations for making the balls several days before hand because there are quite a few steps you have to take before the decorating can begin. Have everyone bring something fun to decorate them with like sprinkles or crushed up Oreos!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day! I absolutely adore this day for so many reasons. I love roses, chocolates, champagne, sweet little surprises, kisses, hugs, and pretty jewelry more than most girls I know! It’s just an all-around great holiday (even if it’s slightly made-up by Hallmark).

In celebration of this pink and red event, I raided my Polyvore closet and picked out my dream outfit for today. Needless to say Kate Spade was in abundance and pink was the main color. For the few lucky women who really do get to wear something cute like this tomorrow, I envy you! It just turns me into a pouty four year old when I see your fabulous photo shoot pictures on Instagram. My outfit of the day is unfortunately an apron, red J Crew button up, and black leggings. Working retail on Valentine’s is not fun! Neither is job hunting.

I don’t know how you’re spending this special day, but I hope you get to spend it in something pretty! My outfit inspiration here was a combination of things I saw on my Instagram feed and in my own photos. Things that sparkle like these gorgeous Kate Spade heels always catch my eye and remind me of why I love being a girl and why I blog. I just can’t help but fall in love with lovely things. Valentine’s Day is no exception!

Birthday Festivities

The past two days have been full of celebration at my house! My sister turned 15 on Wednesday and my mom turned 35 (again) yesterday! Cake and ice cream were sitting around the kitchen all day with us nibbling at them frequently. I brought home a few balloons to tie on my sister’s bed post and also got her the last four Harry Potter movies for a movie watching marathon. She plans to have a big sleepover party with her 10 best friends in two weeks, hopefully this will keep them entertained.

middleton_tavernFor my mom, I took her to Annapolis for a day of eating and shopping. We ate at one of America’s oldest taverns right in the harbor. It’s been continuously operated since 1752 and people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson frequented the establishment back in the day. Before leaving the tavern, I asked the hostess a bit about the place and to my dismay she knew literally nothing about it. She handed me a pamphlet about the historical significance of the tavern, which is where I’m getting this information!

After lunch, mom and I went to the mall near by for a little shopping. I scored some serious deals! I’ll be posting tomorrow a haul of a few things I’ve bought lately. My mom isn’t much of a shopper like I am so I felt bad I was dragging her through the mall! She does enjoy her people watching though and she sat equipped with her iPhone and water bottle. Don’t worry, I tried to make her feel special though! Throughout the day (every hour to be exact) I let her open a little gift I had wrapped up the day before and put in my bag. A few of the things I bought her were Target ankle socks with panda bears and penguins, Yankee candles, nail polish, notebook, and chocolate bars. I love to open gifts so I thought this would be fun for her. Turns out I was right!

We ended the day with some ice cream and Auntie Anne’s pretzels. I love my mom and sister so much. They’re both a very important part of my life and I hope they had happy birthdays!
