The Perfect Brunch Dress

Happy Friday gals! September has finally started and I’m so excited! I did a little decorating around the apartment today, nothing too crazy yet though. I’m waiting until it’s a little cooler here in Dallas, which might never happen. Walking through the aisles of Michael’s and Target, I’m getting ideas for the season but I feel like no matter what I do my place will never look put-together and holiday ready. Does anyone else ever feel like that? Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here though. After all, summer is still technically here, right? And I have the perfect little Sunday brunch dress to share with you!

preppy basic style

Isn’t this scalloped dress adorable? I love how lightweight it is and how I can just throw it on and look really cute! I wore it to my friend’s bridal shower and got several compliments (that’s how I know whether an outfit’s good or not). The best part is that the dress comes in black too! Having color in my wardrobe is important to me so I chose the blue, but for a basic dress to wear to work or brunch, I might opt for the black. Did I mention this dress is $13.99?! Link here!

marley lilly style

For this outfit, I paired my blue SheIn dress with these bronze Jack Rogers sandals, my Marley Lilly scalloped clutch, and my favorite Kate Spade necklace. Styling a preppy outfit isn’t difficult when you have a scalloped hemline as the basic element. I’ll always remember the first time I had ever heard of a scalloped hemline. I sincerely thought designers were putting scallop (the seafood) imagery on the hems of dresses and was thoroughly appalled at the thought. Thank the Lord I actually googled it or I might never have found something new to obsess over!

Enjoy the last of the summer brunches for the season! Take in the summer breezes and tropical mimosas while you have them. Before we know it, we’ll be wishing for the sunshine to bronze our skin again!

Bloggers Gonna Blog

Bloggers Gonna Blog

Monday mornings are good for two things: Catching up on favorite blogs and drinking copious amounts of coffee. I’ve perfected the art of both. I have more coffee mugs than Lorelai Gilmore and follow too many blogs. The funny thing about blogging, especially fashion/lifestyle blogging, is how superficial it can be. Little fashion blogs like mine and yours aren’t usually guilty of this; but big-name blogs have a running track record of it. This brings me to the 8 biggest lies top fashion bloggers tell their readers.

  1. Life is a never-ending latte: ┬áIn every single Instagram photo, in every pretty picture of their desk, and almost every snapshot of their “candid” strolls through a park, fashion bloggers always have coffee. And it must be carried in either a Starbucks cup (#littlegreenstraw) or a Kate Spade travel mug. Take your pick.
  2. We wake up with lipstick on: I’ve seen countless blog posts about “morning routines” and how fashion bloggers put their makeup on. The kicker is that no one wakes up with makeup on and if they do, their skin must really hate them because chances are it was a rough one the night before.
  3. Trips to the market are a must: Saturday mornings are meant for picking up fresh fruits and veggies at the farmer’s market and then arranging them in a chic little bowl on the (marble) kitchen counter at home. Obviously. The majority of us run to the grocery store for our food needs. However, fashion bloggers shop in more stylish, organic places.
  4. Brunch is a way of life: If they aren’t hosting a dinner party, they’re meeting a “blogging bestie” for a brunch full of fresh fruit and mimosas. The brunch is spent hashtagging and cropping the perfect Instagram photo of their drinks and yummy food. Excuse me while I go back to my Cinnamon Toast Crunch and orange juice.
  5. Pretty cars come with the territory: Because it’s totally normal to be 25 and driving a Mercedes Benz. Except it’s not. I’d take one if it were given to me, but at 22 years young, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
  6. The bag makes the woman: Prada is a necessity and red-bottomed shoes come with the territory. And they’ll link both below the photos they post on their blog so they can make sure to get the commission from Nordstrom in case you decide to buy anything.
  7. Jet-setting is a weekend thing: A little trip to Bermuda one weekend and then exploring NYC the next is part of the fashion blogger’s life. Either said fashion blogger pay for it themselves or there’s an event that the blogger is invited to that includes an all-expense paid trip. Hopping from vacation to vacation is just a part of life.
  8. We love to team-up: I’ve seen the phrase “I teamed up with so and so…” far too many times and know that it’s code for “I’m being paid to feature this product on my blog.” Everyone needs a paycheck, but it makes you wonder if they really like the product or not.

Lifestyle Update and Virginia Beach Getaway

I know I’ve been missing in action lately. With school starting and the other endless things I have to do I’ve been neglecting my blogging duties. I’m sorry! Here’s an update on what I’ve been up to the last few days!

laying_on_the_beachI spent a lovely afternoon at the beach enjoying the last bits of summer. The water is finally warm enough to swim in! Our summer has been so mild compared to the years before this. I went in the water waist deep and ignored the urge to run back to shore in case of sharks or other large fish. After watching shark week I haven’t felt the same about the water. Either way, I went in and soaked up the sun and surf… which repeatedly knocked me to the ground. I have sand in places that I will never get out. *Shudders*

Anyway, I took the obligatory beach “selfie” before I rubbed greasybeach_selfie sun screen all over my face. That stuff smells divine but gosh it clogs your pores! I guess the exfoliant of the sand and salt in the water does a decent job at ridding my skin of impurities. At least, it’s a cheap body scrub.

Later that night, I went exploring on the beach front. There’s a statue of King Neptune on the boardwalk that everyone takes pictures in front of. Even though I’ve lived in Virginia Beach for part of my undergrad, I still king_neptune_statuehad to take a dumb picture of it. It’s pretty neat actually. I’ve always enjoyed living in a tourist town. There’s always someone new around and plenty of people to talk to. VA Beach is also a big military hub. If you’re into single guys, then this is the place for you. Quite a few single sailors roam the beach on a Friday night!

A favorite place of mine on the boardwalk is a place called Catch 31 at the Hilton hotel. Easily one of the most relaxed and romantic settings for a restaurant I’ve ever seen. Outdoor and indoor seating is available but I recommend outdoor because there are several large fire pits to eat around next to palm trees with little lights catch_31_virginia_beachwrapped around them. A funny story I have about this place is going to their rooftop bar when I was only 19. I was with a group of about 35 people who were all over 21. I got there and they said the only way I could be in there is if I stayed in the “VIP” section. I happily agreed until I realized that area was sectioned off by ropes and I couldn’t leave… and there was no one in the “VIP” section. Needless to say I left after about 15 minutes.

virginia_beach_boardwalkThursday morning I woke up to a beautiful beach outside my hotel room. I sat outside on my balcony for awhile flipping through my Instagram feed and then checking the weather. I’ve never seen so many people actively running on the beach. I guess if you live near a beach you should probably use it for something other than tanning. The view is always great too. Many ships- naval and civilian- come in and out of Norfolk. I could see a huge aircraft carrier on the horizon coming back to port and several fishing boats cruising along as well.

After getting dressed for the day I wandered downstairs to the outdoor patio to have breakfast and a drink. I ordered French toast with lots of butter and syrup and a Mimosa to start the day off right. There’s something so wonderful about brunch. Themimosas_at_noon variety of food that’s appropriate to eat is just so much more exciting than any other time of the day. That Mimosa though, I’m still happy thinking about it. Not too much champagne and just enough orange juice to make me think I was the healthiest person on the patio- actually I was the only person. The off-season is so quiet.

After brunch I made my way over to my university to check in with some friends and revisit some old memories. Every time I get on campus it feels like I’m walking on hollowed ground. Many things happened there that even on my death bed will give me a laugh.

I sat and talked with two of my very good friends, Bethany and Liz, about all regent_university that’s going on in life. We had so many good laughs. Girl time is so necessary! These ladies have some funny stories. I needed to laugh. One of the girls shared the funniest story about one of the worst dates she’s ever been on. Apparently, she had worn heels on the date and the guy asked her if she always walked with a limp or is it just because of the shoes she was wearing. I smacked my head against the table laughing so hard. Who honestly asks those questions on a first date? I haven’t met anyone so far! If you have funny first date stories please share them in the comments section. They just crack me up!

I ended the day with a little shopping in Williamsburg and ended up scoring a Banana Republic dress for my mom and a shirt from Lucky Brand for my sister. I went into a few of my favorite stores (J. Crew, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren etc.) and shopped around a bit but didn’t find anything worth the price on the price tag.

I drove home and said good bye to my school assuming the next time I’ll see it is at graduation in the spring. For those of you who don’t know, I’m an online student. It’s cheaper and I get to travel and work in really cool places. I love this lifestyle!

Sunday Brunch Style

Sunday Brunch
Sundays are meant for going to church early service and then heading to brunch with family and friends! An ideal Sunday to me is church, brunch by the water, window shopping down the quaint little streets of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia picking up yummy cupcakes at Alexandria Cupcakes.
I’d finish the day off with a walk by the river and then a relaxing night at home watching my favorite shows. Doesn’t this sound lovely?
