Long Weekend Style

I hope you all enjoyed your extra day off yesterday (for those of you who are in the States!) I certainly took advantage of the three-day weekend and all the sales that were going on. I ended up scoring a Lauren Conrad dress from her fall collection for $12, Lauren Conrad jeans for $20, and a Cynthia Rowley maxi skirt for $16. The sales are the best part of the festivities that typically go on during Memorial Day weekend. Here’s a little look into my weekend!

I spent Memorial Day on the beach with my parents and got a lovely sunburn on my left shoulder. Bring on the Aloe!

For our little local beach, there was quite the turnout of beach goers. It was hilarious to watch the kids get in the water, which was freezing, and splash each other, freak out of something touched their foot, or get sand in their pants.

Flip flops in the sand are the best thing in the world to me. I usually buy white or gray sandals because they go with everything. I think these ones are from Payless.

For the beach I sported this shorts and tank top combo from Old Navy. I got the shorts last October for $1.47! Shop summer clothes for the next year starting in mid-August when retailers are really trying to get rid of warm-weather clothes so they have room for the back-to-school stuff.

My jeans are from Lucky Brand and my top is Old Navy, both of which I shopped for in the off season and got amazing deals on.

My dear friend, Abbey, gave these gorgeous earrings to me and I have no idea where they’re from. I love wearing them with other bold colors like the yellow top I’m wearing.

This long weekend was so desperately needed. I’m thrilled that I got to spend so much time just relaxing and doing nothing. I hope we get through this week without too much pain. No guarantees though. Enjoy you’re Tuesday!

Mornings With Liz

Hello beauties! Yesterday was a long day that used up most of my energy, whence why I didn’t write anything to share with you. Today, is my recovery day so to speak. I slept like a baby last night and literally just woke up. I’ve determined that mornings should be done differently in this country. The waking up at the crack of dawn, barely choking down a bowl of cereal, and mad dash to work isn’t a healthy way to live each day. I propose a new kind of morning!

how_mornings_should_be

Does this kind of a morning not look infinitely better than the kind you and I are used to? I’m all for #hustle as long as we can still enjoy our lives. It’s mind boggling to me that we have to live our personal lives around a 9-5 schedule. Why is that? Based on what I’ve noticed in my job search, more and more companies are realizing that this kind of work life isn’t conducive with how people live today. Many companies are starting to value flex hours (employees pick the times they work). As long as work is getting done, I think it’s a great idea!

The 9-5 schedule used to work for Americans. As years have gone by though, we are getting increasingly busy and have more on our plates than ever before. If you have kids, you know how true this is! Shuffling them from school to practices and to friend’s houses is just exhausting. Combine that with having to work around a strict schedule of business hours and you’ll be feeling defeated.

Our mornings should be beautiful. A good breakfast, hot coffee, the day’s paper, a nice workout, and happier drive to work with less road rage would be so lovely, don’t you think?

Birthday Festivities

The past two days have been full of celebration at my house! My sister turned 15 on Wednesday and my mom turned 35 (again) yesterday! Cake and ice cream were sitting around the kitchen all day with us nibbling at them frequently. I brought home a few balloons to tie on my sister’s bed post and also got her the last four Harry Potter movies for a movie watching marathon. She plans to have a big sleepover party with her 10 best friends in two weeks, hopefully this will keep them entertained.

middleton_tavernFor my mom, I took her to Annapolis for a day of eating and shopping. We ate at one of America’s oldest taverns right in the harbor. It’s been continuously operated since 1752 and people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson frequented the establishment back in the day. Before leaving the tavern, I asked the hostess a bit about the place and to my dismay she knew literally nothing about it. She handed me a pamphlet about the historical significance of the tavern, which is where I’m getting this information!

After lunch, mom and I went to the mall near by for a little shopping. I scored some serious deals! I’ll be posting tomorrow a haul of a few things I’ve bought lately. My mom isn’t much of a shopper like I am so I felt bad I was dragging her through the mall! She does enjoy her people watching though and she sat equipped with her iPhone and water bottle. Don’t worry, I tried to make her feel special though! Throughout the day (every hour to be exact) I let her open a little gift I had wrapped up the day before and put in my bag. A few of the things I bought her were Target ankle socks with panda bears and penguins, Yankee candles, nail polish, notebook, and chocolate bars. I love to open gifts so I thought this would be fun for her. Turns out I was right!

We ended the day with some ice cream and Auntie Anne’s pretzels. I love my mom and sister so much. They’re both a very important part of my life and I hope they had happy birthdays!

Beyonce’s 22 Day Diet Plan

It’s February and I broke my “clean eating” resolution about 3 weeks ago. It got boring and expensive. For your daily dose of inspiration though, Beyonce has announced a 22 day diet plan that she and her trainer have put together that will get you on the right track!

This plan is completely vegan and essentially cleans out your insides of all the gunk you put in it on a daily basis. Sounds great right? Meals delivered to your door and everything is completely measured out for you. There’s nothing better than knowing you’re getting enough kale in your diet. All good things come at a price though, and in this case, a high one. Each meal costs between $9-16.

strawberry_saladHere’s my hangup with it- too expensive. I get why Beyonce is promoting this diet; it’s healthy and with her star power she can make a few (million) dollars off of it. However, truth be told, if we all had the money she does to spend on our diets, we would be eating just as healthily as she is. Well, most of us would. I would love to be able to make my favorite salad of toasted walnuts and pecans, chopped grapes, goat cheese, strawberries, spinach, and balsamic vinegar everyday. My budget doesn’t allow me to eat like this though. Most of America’s population can’t either.

This country is interesting because the poorest people tend to be the most overweight because they only have access to pre-packaged, high calorie food, which is cheaper. Due to our nation’s large geography, most of our fresh food is loaded on trucks 700 (or more) miles away and delivered to our stores. Economically speaking, in order for the farmers and stores to make a profit, they have to price the goods at a rate that will cover growing and shipping expenses, plus pay the people that are part of the process. The strawberries at my grocery store come from a totally different region of the United States and the price is reflected in that. I’m not angry at the farmers, the stores, or anyone else; it’s simply part of life. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to enjoy this luxury too often.

3 Ways to Eat Healthier

So what can we do to improve our diets? I really wish I could give you a simple answer to this, but there really isn’t one. I do have a few suggestions though.

  1. Plant a small garden- Pick out a few of your favorite fruits and veggies and plant them in the ground. For you city people, choose plants that don’t require deep soil so that you can plant them in window boxes and clay pots on your deck or in your window. You may not be growing enough veggies to feed your family for an entire season, but every bit helps.
  2. Go vegan one or two days a week- Like I just said, every bit helps. Reducing your intake of animal-based food to only five days a week can help cleanse your digestive system and it won’t ruin your budget.
  3. Juice it- I love a smoothie on days when I’m just too busy to eat a normal meal. These days can be for a juice cleanse. Try it weekly on your busiest days. There are tons of great recipes for healthy smoothies with fruits and veggies mixed in. My suggestion would be to buy the frozen fruit packages for cheap and spend the extra on buying the green goodness that goes in smoothie.

I think the key to a good diet is not about depriving yourself of everything (whether healthy, good stuff or chocolatey deliciousness), but enjoying it in moderation. If you’re a recent college graduate like me with lots of debt and no job offers, this rule is what we live and die by.

P.S. For any of my Jordanian readers, my thoughts and prayers are with your country in the wake of the horrific death of your pilot.

Playoff Attire

Playoffs

In light of my team making it into the playoffs, I’m dedicating a post to it. I’m quite happy. It’s been awhile boys! When I was little, my parents would take me to baseball games and I’d be the kid decked out in orange and black jumping up and down trying to get on the mega tron. I was so cute! Now, I’d still be the girl doing that just with a lot more awkwardness. Less orange and black too. More J Crew and Tory Burch with a touch of my team colors.

Some people may hate me for saying this (especially my southern readers) but I really like baseball more than football. There’s so much more finesse in baseball compared to football. Plus, baseball is easier and more relaxing to watch. Its an American past time that I cherish and has been in my family for the last hundred years. Both sides of my family have had quite a few good players!

Tell me what team you’re pulling for in the playoffs!
